Open/Canadian Canoeing

Open or Canadian canoes are a much more versatile craft than the kayak. They can be paddled solo or tandem, or even rafted together to make a more stable craft that won't tip over in rougher conditions. Canadian canoes can even be rigged with sails for longer journeys.
During the activity you will be given the opportunity to learn basic canoeing skills such as paddling forwards, backwards, turning, and hopefully master the skill of paddling in a straight line. Canadian canoeing is an activity where co-operation and communication are vital.
The aim of the Open canoeing session is to stay dry for as long as possible. Time will be allocated at the end for a get wet session, so please bring a complete change of clothes, spare shoes and a towel. As the event takes place outdoors, you will also need to bring suitable clothing for the prevailing conditions on the day.
It would be expected that participants have the ability to swim 100m although the venues used are usually shallow waters.
The lakes we use are away from shops so it is also advisable to bring any food or drinks you may require.
Why not combine this with another activity and make a day of it. Depending on the venue it can be linked with any of the following:
Archery
Team building/Problem solving exercises
Orienteering
Climbing
Abseiling
